1. Listen for laughter. One of the biggest indicators of a table’s skill level is the amount of “noise” that comes from it. Poker players that are plainly dressed, quiet, and otherwise statuesque are generally solid players, or, even if not,a t least attempting to concentrate and play better than normal. Tables with loud, rowdy players, drinks and alcohol flowing, and flashy, gaudy people at the table are indicators of a less than serious game, which is a sure sign that the game is going to be easier than normal. Unlike online poker, you don't have to worry about finding a PokerStars marketing code free money deal or referral code - you only have to find the softest table to get free money. When you walk into the casino, listen for cheers, laughter, and chatter. Those are the tables you should scope out first.
2. Stepping out of your comfort zone. If you have an understand of games other than hold’em, you may be able to find much more profitable games than hold’em at the casino. Take a look at the omaha and stud games, or other games in bigger casinos, and see how the players are stacking up at those tables. See people calling pot-sized 3 bets preflop in omaha with QQ52 offsuit? It may be time to skip the hold’em game and jump into the omaha game with these guys. Just make sure to still check out hold’em, before going into the other game. If it’s a game you’re not as comfortable with, and you find a game almost as juicy as the omaha game, it may be better to use the edge you have in hold’em. Careful selection is key in maximizing profit when faced with multiple choices for game selection.
3. Understanding position. If there’s only one seat open at one particular game, and it places you to the right of the big, aggressive stacks at your table, you may want to either wait for a better seat to open up, or look for a better game elsewhere. It's just common sense - if someone offered you Absolute Poker free money but told you that you had to wait a couple of days to get it, wouldn't you wait it out instead of depositing your own money? When out of position to the better, bigger stacks at your table, your expected profit will decrease based on the natural flow of chips in the opposite direction of where the big stacks are. Look for open seats that put the bigger stacks to your right, if possible. Or, request a seat at the next new table that opens up; if it’s a cap game, you’re guaranteed to come to the table at the cap, and at an even ground with the other players at your table.
4. Knowing when to say no. If your home casino is smaller, there may only be a few tables to choose from. If you see no tables that are worth jumping into, it may be best to simply call it a night and either wait for a game to develop later or go to a different casino. It may even require you to call it a night and go home altogether, but playing in a tough game “just because I” is a recipe for breaking your bankroll quickly. Part of the reason you want to scout for good games is to understand when there’s just no game worth playing in; when you find that circumstance, follow your instinct and avoid playing.
